John 4:7-15 - There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." … the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?"… Jesus …said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? … Jesus…said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw." NASU
No one had to tell her to ask Jesus questions, because this is exactly what she does. First question, what are you doing asking me for a drink since you are Jewish and I am a Samaritan? There was racial prejudice in Jesus' day exactly like there is racial prejudice today but that doesn't make it okay. Have you ever noticed how Jesus does an amazing job of never answering people's questions, but either makes a statement that has them thinking in another direction or He asks them a question of His own and says, you answer mine and then I will answer yours. The problem is they don't want to answer His question because it will make them look foolish. In our text today Jesus doesn't answer her question about why He is asking her for a drink but makes a statement that causes her to be intrigued. Here is what He says: "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." What about us today? Do we know the "Gift of God"? Do we know who Jesus is?
Acts 8:19-20 - "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! The gift of God was the Holy Spirit and He could not be bought with money. Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The gift of God is eternal life and this gift is in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. The gift of God here is salvation. Salvation comes becomes God is Gracious and we can be saved if we will have faith in God's plan. 2 Tim. 1:6 - For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Once again the apostle Paul is reminding us the gift of God is the Holy Spirit. If you are reading this Pump Up today and would like to have this free gift (the Holy Spirit) from God here is all you have to do. Acts 2:38 - Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." When you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, then you will have the living water Jesus spoke about to the woman at the well. Think About These: God doesn't call us to be successful but He does call us to be faithful. Let God have your life. He can do more with it than you can. Stay Pumped, Gary A.
