What Are The Benefits Of Anointing The Sheep's Head?

Ps 23:5 - "You have anointed my head with oil;…"  NASU 

• Psalm Read Most Often 

Psalm 23 has been called the most often read Psalm. It is probably read at more funeral services than any other passage. I know when I visited people in the hospital and asked if they had a favorite scripture they wanted me to read to them Psalm 23 was asked for more often than any other passage of scripture.
 
In this passage the shepherd has anointed the sheep's head with oil.
 
What are the benefits of anointing the sheep's head with oil? 

• Anointing Is For Protection 

John 10:3-5 - "…and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  4 "When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.  5 "A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers."  NASU
 
The sheep will follow the shepherd because they can hear and know his voice, but if the sheep develops an ear infection, the true shepherd's voice will not sound the same.
 
The end result of a sheep with an ear infection is the sheep will not follow his master because his voice sounds like a stranger.
 
If the sheep wanders away from his shepherd, this can very easily lead to his death.

Therefore, a shepherd will rub olive oil mixed with sulfur into the ears of the sheep for protection against insects and the diseases that come with an infection. 

• Jesus Is The True Shepherd 

Jesus says He is the true shepherd and that He is willing to lay down His life for His sheep. He also says His sheep will follow Him because they know the sound of His voice.
 
Therefore, it is extremely important that we sheep have our head's anointed to maintain the ability to hear and know the true shepherd's voice.
 
This is why I have been saying for 35 years to read your Bible. The Word of God is able to anoint your ears and keep you safe from the evil one. Do yourself a favor and stay immersed in the Word of God.
